FAQ
who we are
Qi was started by a hand full of former Openmoko employees. Depending on the time of day we are between 6 and 8 people. We also get support from several OpenWrt developers and other people from various areas.

what we do
Qi Hardware builds copyleft hardware running a stable linux kernel and free software. Our first product is the NanoNote™ a small multifunction device.

how we do it
Our development process is open to the public from day one, in terms of software as well as hardware. For our product lines we will not try to build the perfect device first and then share it, but instead integrate our development models into our business.
In the case of the NanoNote™ the first version, Ben NanoNote™ will give us and the community a stable basis to develop on. Once we get to a state where we have reached the full potential of the device we will take it a step further, modify the hardware and add capabilities such as WiFi or Bluetooth. Ultimately we are aiming for a nano sized notebook, which may include GSM or even 3G as well as GPS.
Throughout this process we will release all files and data under copyleft licenses, CC-BY-SA for content and technical drawings etc and GPL for software.

All of this is work in progress, please let us know if you think you can help. Every little bit of help is appreciated.

Ok, I want one. Will there be a list for presales?
Hi,
thanks for the nice comment :) Best is probably to sign up to the announce list here. Any information regarding sales will be shared there.

[...] The initial product ships in fall 2009. If there are any readers that can envision applications for this, now is the time to check it out. I can envision several industrial and scientific uses for this platform. I’ve included Mosh’s description and vision of the product below. – Anthony Qi Hardware, founded on the belief in open hardware, produces mass market quality hardware applying free software principles to consumer electronics. The three fundamental elements in our development are copyleft hardware, upstream kernels and community driven software. Each of these form a vital part of our Qi or “energy flow”. Only if developers truly know how the device functions can they exploit its maximum potential, only if we maintain and move the kernel upstream can applications make use of the newest technology, and only if we listen to the community and work together with our customers can we redefine freedom. For a short overview on Qi check the FAQ. [...]
